February 29, 2008 Sally Van Meter has scheduled another reunion with Eric, Caleb & Keith of Open Road (and David Richey of the Billy Pilgrims!) at Oskar Blues in Lyons, 9 p.m. on Leap Year Day.
June 19, 2007 The Billy Pilgrims are traveling quite a bit this summer, visiting some old Open Road and Hit & Run friends around Colorado and the West. Check out www.billypilgrims.com for the schedule. We hope to see you all at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival this coming Saturday! Check out www.bluegrass.com and www.billypilgrims.com for more info.
December 8, 2006 We just found out the reunion show with Brad at the Swing Station tonight is SOLD OUT! Sorry if you didn't already call for tickets for tonight's show, but we hope you can still come out to Oskar Blues in Lyons on Sunday to see Caleb, Erin & Aaron, and Dave Richey in Wagon Train (later renamed to The Billy Pilgrims!) (6 p.m show, downstairs). Hope to see you soon! Happy Holidays from Open Road!
November 15, 2006 Special Open Road reunion announcement: Happy Holidays! Keith, Eric, and Caleb will be doing a reunion Open Road show with Bradford Lee Folk at his bar, the Swing Station, in Laporte, CO, on Friday, Dec. 8. Stay tuned at www.swingstationusa.com.
November 14, 2006 Caleb is joining the new Mr. & Mrs. Youngberg project called Wagon Train (later renamed to The Billy Pilgrims). Mrs. Erin sings and plays upright bass, Mr. Aaron plays banjo and pedal steel, Caleb plays mandolin and electric guitar, and David Richey sings lead and plays acoustic guitar. Wagon Train's first performance is opening for some of Open's Road's longtime friends, Sweet Sunny South at the Rialto Theater in Loveland, CO, on Friday, Nov. 17. Check it out! Tickets and info at (970) 962-2120.
October 15, 2006 Keith found another way to get people back to Colorado Springs. He gathered up some musicians to play at Colorado College where he teaches the world's future leaders how to play bluegrass. Caleb & Keith had a great time with longtime friends of Open Road Gene Libbea and Todd Livingston and recent Colorado transplant David Richey, who made the college students scream and swoon with his singing and guitar pickin. Meanwhile, Eric was touring with Drew Emmitt, and Jeff was touring with Great American Taxi, where they were bound to meet a lot of swooning fans, too.
August 25, 2006 We hope to see a lot of Colorado folks tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 26), probably including a lot of Keith's students and friends because we're finally playing in his town of Colo Sprgs!
July 6, 2006 With a lot of other projects going on this summer, it takes a little bit of tricky logistics to get everyone in the same place. We're on our way to Canada for the Prince Edward Island Bluegrass and Old Time Festival. Caleb and Jefferson flew to Boston, dragging talented guest musician Todd Livingston with them, and they are picking up Eric in Maine on the way (who just flew in from Alaska where he was teaching workshops and fishing). Keith is already in Canada vacationing with his lovely wife, Sharon. We've got a few shows in August in Colorado so locals may see us a little more. And Amy finally posted some photos from May High Street Concert season finale/Jefferson Hamer Open Road hometown premier. Hope you're having a great summer, and just maybe we'll see you, if not with Open Road, with one of our many other musical outlets.
April 12, 2006 Well, we just got back from the Durango Meltdown, a great festival. Thank you to all our longtime friends who came out to see Open Road, and we enjoyed meeting some new friends. It was Brad's last performance with Open Road and a very memorable event. Nevermind all the rumors you have heard, the real truth is that Caleb, Eric and Keith don't want to hang up their hats just yet. We still love to play and sing bluegrass, and we are happy to announce two upcoming dates with Jefferson Hamer. Please come check it out. Sally Van Meter will be a special guest at these two performances: This Friday, April 14 at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver for a benefit for Kirk Rundstrom of Split Lip Rayfield and on Saturday, May 6, at the final High Street Concert Series of the season in Lyons. Be sure to get tickets in advance at the Stone Cup (442 High Street, Lyons, CO, (303) 823-2345), because this concert series sells out in advance. Jan 18, 2005 Happy New Year!
Dec. 6, 2005 Lucky Drive was featured in a Highlight Review in the December issue of Bluegrass Unlimited: "Open Road's third Rounder release is the Colorado band's best yet, solidifying their place at the forefront of the growing ranks of young bluegrass bands..."(Read full review here.)

Sept. 17, 2005 On satelite radio: We just learned that the performance and interview Open Road taped for Sirius Satellite radio in New York last month will air on the bluegrass channel 37 on Sept. 22 at 11:00 AM
Sept. 15, 2005 On TV: The Open Road appearance on Denver's ABC's affiliate KGMH Channel 7 has moved to the 5 p.m. News tomorrow -- Friday, Sept. 16 -- to promote Cletus Fest in Denver at Invesco Field on Saturday.
Sept. 2, 2005 Thanks to Marquee Magazine for naming Open Road Best Bluegrass Band in the latest issue.
Aug. 31, 2005 Open Road is honored that Brad's original song "Lucky Drive" has debuted at number 29 on the Bluegrass Unlimited National Bluegrass Survey Song Charts for September 2005.

July 21, 2005 See you in Wyoming this weekend at the Beartrap Summer Festival in Casper. And then in Montana for a week in some of our favorite towns before the Oyster Ridge Music Festival in Kemmerer, WY, next weekend.
July 20, 2005 Great news: We learned that Lucky Drive hit the Billboard bluegrass charts the first week it was released. And here's a cool review in the New York Post: "WITH George Straight's over-orchestrated new CD yawner hitting record shacks, the time is ripe for a bluegrass band like Open Road to ask, 'What happened to country music?' With a banjo/fiddle/guitar combo, Open Road provides its own answer. The traditional American sound is alive and well on "Lucky Drive," a disc that examines wanderlust, wealth and mental wellbeing with old-time country style. The instrumental interplay is terrific, pure and simple. It's as if the band plays huddled around a single microphone. The straightforward arrangements allow singer Brad Folk's tenor to always stay in front of the music. His twanging, emotional croon is original, yet reverential. Download these: 'Wanderin' Blues,' 'I'm Lonesome.'"
July 11, 2005 Open Road's appearances July 14-16 in VA and TN have been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. Please see updated Tour page.
July 6, 2005 Hope to see you all this Friday July 8 in Lyons at Rogers Hall (4th and High street) for our hometown CD release party. You can get advance tickets at the Stone Cup coffee shop in Lyons. Doors open at 7 p.m. and show starts at 8 p.m.
June 28, 2005 It was truly an honor to play at the Ryman. Thanks to Old Crow Medicine Show for the opportunity and for everyone who came out to the show and bought an early copy of Lucky Drive. We really felt welcome. Great to see our buddies Ray and Mike again and meet a lot of new wonderful people. Thanks to Eddie Stubbs for the encouragement and for posing for several photos.
June 9, 2005 As part of our Lucky Drive tour, we have some new dates in our home state of Colorado this month in addition to our first time playing at the historic Ryman in Nashville on June 23—with Old Crow Medicine Show. We'll be back at Avogadro's on June 12 in addition to some stops in the high country in Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs this week. And don't miss a special performance celebrating Lucky Drive at Rogers Hall in Lyons July 8.
May 10, 2005 We are pleased to announce that Open Road's new Rounder CD, Lucky Drive, will be released June 28! The CD includes several new originals, including Brad's title track, inspired by our trips to LA in the past year or so. And we were honored that one of our living heroes, Vern Williams, sang with Brad on "I'm Lonesome," a song we learned from a Larry and Happy Smith recording on the Blueridge label. You can preorder CDs from us now on our web site: Click here to BUY! See all you Colorado folks this Friday at the Greeley Bluegrass Roundup! And Nevada folks, we'll be in Laughlin Saturday-Monday. More information is available on our Tour page.
April 19, 2005 We've had a great time visiting Knoxville, Nashville
and Tazewell, TN, and the midwest in April. We enjoyed hanging out with
our Chicago pal Ray, in TN and finally in his home state at the American
Legion Hall in Evanston. Thanks to Chip and everyone who put on the
show, and to Ray for spreading the word about the band. In the St. Louis
area, we had fun staying up late with hard-working promoter Kate and
some of the McCoury Band. More photos to come on the Photos
page. Send us any if you have 'em.
March 24, 2005 Thanks to all who came to Lyons to the High Street concert. We had a sold out show, with a record attendance, according to concert organizers. There's nothing like playing in our home towns. Check out photos from the weekend including our shows at the Fox and the Gothic with Donna The Buffalo on the Photos page.
March 4, 2005 In addition to our shows with Donna The Buffalo this month, there is a special Open Road Lyons High Street Concert on Saturday, March 19. We will need Street Team help postering for this show and passing out fliers at the Donna the Buffalo shows. Boulder County area people should check out the Open Road Street Team and email Street@openroadbluegrass.com if you want to help. Downloadable posters and fliers are available here and on the High Street Concerts site:
March 2, 2005 It was hard to leave Paonia and return to the Front Range, but we did it. We were playing Paradise (Theatre), afterall. Thanks to everyone who helped put on the show and those who provided places for us to stay, great food and fun, including our new acupuncturist friend Rebecca and our longtime elk rancher pal Willy. Avogadro's Number in Fort Collins was a wonderful part of our weekend, too. Thanks to everyone in Fort Collins for hometown love. Photos from the weekend are appearing this week on the Photos page. Keep checking back for updates.
February 25, 2005 We are looking forward to seeing all our longtime Colorado fans tonight at Avogadro's Number in Fort Collins. Fred & Cathay Zipp will be opening the show. Show starts at 8 p.m. Avo's is located at 605 S. Mason. (Call 970-493-5555 if you can't find it)
February 15, 2005 We're back home after one of our favorite trips to Montana and Utah. Thanks to everyone for coming out for bluegrass music! Some Utah friends put together a last-minute show for us and local Utah bands at the Circuit to make up for the cancelled festival at the Delta Center.
February 10, 2005 We had great time in Missoula last night at the Other Side. Missoula music lovers are loud and appreciative, and kept calling us back for more. Thanks for coming out to everyone including our friends from the Broken Valley Road Show. We even played Mule Train (which we recorded on our upcoming CD) twice. Caleb's voice needs to recover from all the yelling "Yah!" We're headed to Craig tonight looking forward to more big sky hospitality in one of our favorite states.
February 5, 2005 We're looking forward to our quick Montana tour next week -- Missoula, Craig, Billings and Bozeman -- before heading to Salt Lake City for a festival with our friends including Kathy Kallick, The Wilders, and Sally Van Meter who will be performing with Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen. We're leaving Tuesday to meet up with Eric Thorin in Driggs: He's been playing and recording with Ben Winship and having a good ol' time. Hope to see you all somewhere along the way! We're happy that the folks in Missoula are already talking about our visit in the Missoulian newspaper: Click here to read all about it.
January 23, 2005 Colorado fans, Open Road is very happy to announce that we will return to Avogadro's Number in Fort Collins on Friday, Feb. 25. It's been eight months since we played in Fort Collins, and it will be great to return to the bluegrass center of Colorado. Anyone who would like to help promote the show should contact the Open Road Street Team by emailing your contact info (name, address, phone, and e-mail address) to Street@openroadbluegrass.com. Blank In The Life tour posters are available here: click to download OpenRoad_InTheLife_Poster.pdf. We are also looking forward to returning to Paonia for a show at the Paradise Theater the following night on Saturday, Feb. 26. It's been even longer since we've been to Paonia and it will be fun to catch up with our music-loving pals there. Check for updates on Tour page. Montana fans, we are also pleased to announce that we are coming back to Montana Feb. 9-12, before the Mountain Grass Festival in Salt Lake City on Feb. 13:
January 15, 2005 Happy New Year! We're all
taking a little time off after recording. Everyone recorded last month
in Denver, and Caleb and Sally are working on mixing in California this
month. You will hear the latest when we know more about when the new
CD will be released. We had a lot of fun recording it, Sally Van Meter
did a great job producing once again, and it will be available in time
for festival season, we hope -- spring or summer. You can check Rounder's
web site in the next few months for information. To see some of
Keith's pictures from the studio, check out the Photos
from the Road page. In the meantime, Brad has been pickin honky tonk out back in the shed
on Overland, Keith has been teaching banjo lessons, Eric and Caleb have
been playing music with various people, including members of the Yonder
Mountain String Band (see pictures of Eric on
the Yonder Mountain site and of Caleb here),
and Paul is working on a new solo recording.

November 16, 2004 We just returned from a month-long tour in the Southeast with lots of memorable events, stories, and good times. While in Nashville, the band was privileged to play 4 shows at the Station Inn, plus a Gibson showcase in Opryland. Over the month, we were pleased to have IBMA award winners Jason Carter, Mike Bub, Rob Ickes (of Blue Highway), and Andy Leftwich (from Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder) join the band on stage. During that run we also had The Steep Canyon Rangers, Noam Pikelny, Ferrel Stowe and various other guests join us at the Station Inn for a first-class pickin' party in Nashville. In Branson, Missouri, at Silver Dollar City, Open Road was joined by Little Roy Lewis of the Lewis Family, who tore through some jaw-dropping banjo tunes at breakneck speed. Other highlights included IBMA in Louisville, KY, where we saw a lot of our old friends, staying up until all hours of the night picking in hospitality suite showcases and catching up, the North Carolina LEAF festival (with 5000+ attendees) and some shows with NC friends The Steep Canyon Rangers. The band put together some rough versions of potential material for our next Rounder Records release at Matt Flinner's house in Nashville. Mike Bub from the Del McCoury Band acted as hospitality director and Music City tour guide, sharing bluegrass history stories and taking the band to the gravesites of John Hartford and Jimmy Martin (future site). Check out some photos from Nashville on our Photos from the Road page and some photos from Branson on our Photos page.
August 19, 2004 Our third visit to the Grand Targhee festival was once again a fabulous festival with wonderful fans and fellow musicians. Thanks so much for making us feel welcome. Brad sang with Tim O'Brien, the band joined Tim and his band, and Paul joined a special super fiddle jam with Dirk Powell and Darol Anger. We also had a great time picking with friends all night, visiting with the Reeltime Travelers, Kane's River and so many other great folks. Some of our favorite guests who sat in with Open Road were Jason Thomas from Kane's River on fiddle, and Bill Dorsey of Keith's hometown in Idaho on elk call. You can see some photos posted on our photos page and you can read about it in the Idaho State Journal.
August 10, 2004 The highlight of our trip to southern Illinois to play at the Wabash River festival was singing with one of our favorite bluegrass singers, Junior Sisk. You can see some photos on our photos page.
June 22, 2004 You all probably know we love Canada and Canadians, but we just got back from a facinating new part of Canada for us, the Yukon Territory. The sky didn't darken until well after 2 a.m., when it was dusk; in fact the sun probably never really went down completely. Everyone we met there was creative, friendly, and interesting. We were honored to be part of the Kluane Bluegrass Festival and the adjoining music festival in Haines Junction, YT. We started out the trip in Juneau, Alaska, where one of Paul Lee's pals from his Ryestraw days, Albert McDonnell, helped us put on a show in town. Thanks to Colette for the night on the boat, and thanks to Dr. Bruce, the Hayes family, and all the great bluegrass-loving Yukon festival volunteers. You can see some photos on our Alaska photos page and the Yukon photos page. Our tour ended up in the Northwest U.S. states including an Anacortes show put on by our friend and liner notes author Barry Brower, and a Tractor Tavern show in Seattle with some wild Missourians, The Wilders.
May 25, 2004 Just got back from our official In The Life tour in California, where some of our favorite audiences are! Thanks for the opportunity to play bluegrass for you in Culver City, Ojai, Santa Cruz, Chico and Folsom. We also enjoyed performing for the FolkScene show on KPFK. Thanks to new member Paul Lee for showing us around his home state.
May 3, 2004 OK, Colorado folks. We're celebrating the release of In The Life at several store performances this week: Longmont, CO, Borders Bookstore on May 4, Broomfield Borders Bookstore on May 5 and Bart's CD Cellar in Boulder on May 6. Come out and be one of the first in Colorado to get the new CD! You can also buy it from our Web store.
March 22, 2004 We had a great time in Austin at the giant South By Southwest festival, honored to be selected for an official showcase with Old Crow Medicine Show, and also enjoying our time with our record label at a Rounder private brunch event, and opportunities to see so many other great bands in all genres possible, from the Hives to BR549. Thanks to Bob and Sharon and to Ron and Krista for your hospitality. You can see some photos on our photos page.
March 13, 2004 Everyone who is wondering about the songs
on the new CD can check out Rounder's web site listing:
March 10, 2004 We just found out from Rounder that Open Road's next CD, "In The Life" will be released May 4! |
